Sore throat is a common condition especially during the rainy season. We experience it at least once during this season. Here are some basic things that you need to know about the condition and how to manage it.
At the onset of a sore throat, you don’t need to hurry to your doctor for a consultation. Most sore throats are caused by viruses and can be easily managed at home. Try gargling warm water with salt–the most basic solution–to help reduce discomfort and swelling.

Aside from gargling, it is also recommended to drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration. Staying hydrated keeps your throat moist and helps ease congestion.
While you want to get well from a sore throat soon, please be reminded that it can last for at least a week before it clears completely. Within this recovery period, the worst pain may be felt for about 3 days. Don’t worry if it doesn’t go away quickly, your body has its own period for recovery. You just need to give it the time it needs to heal.
Most importantly, don’t self-medicate with antibiotics. If your condition gets worse, consult your doctor for the right diagnosis and medication. Never take antibiotics without the supervision of your physician. Taking excessive and inappropriate antibiotics may bring you more harm instead of relief.
